Chagford Church of England Primary School

Newsletter 17th April 2015

Dear Parents and Friends,

Welcome back to the start of the Summer Term and what wonderful weather to make the transition into school so much easier after the Easter holiday.

Could I firstly express my gratitude to all those parents who have personally congratulated me on the permanent Headship position, I have been touched by your thoughtfulness.  As you know I am extremely pleased to be leading this fantastic school into an exciting future and look forward to continuing to work closely with the whole school community, to ensure the best education for all the children.

The weather has been super since we have been back so please could you make sure that you protect your children by applying sun cream at home before coming to school. The children can bring in a labelled bottle of sun cream they can reapply later in the day if it is extremely hot. Sunhats are really important, especially once the sun is at its hottest at lunchtime, so please make sure that your children have a labelled hat in school, at all times.

The after school clubs begin next week so please make sure that you have given permission for your child, otherwise they will not be able to attend. Gardening club will be moving to Friday’s after school with Mr Billinghurst. If you have any spare time available and enjoy working in the garden I know that Mr Billinghurst would greatly appreciate any offers of help. This is the perfect time for planting up the school garden and there are lots to be done! Thank you.

This is traditionally an extremely busy term with sport playing a large part, so please ensure that the children have their PE kits in school every day so that we can take every opportunity to go outside in the better weather. Next Monday Chris Mount will be starting our cricket season with the children and we are all looking forward to refining our cricketing skills over this half term. Could I thank Chris at this point for his commitment to our school sport and I know that the children gain a lot from his experience and constant enthusiasm.

Today the football team are attending the West Devon Finals at Okehampton College– good luck to them all. Thank you Craig, for your continued commitment to school football and for giving up so much of your time to support the children in matches and competitions.

PTFA News

At our recent fundraising ideas meeting we came up with tons of new and exciting ways of bringing money into our school, but we’d really like your input – we need to know which of the ideas you feel are worth pursuing. So look out for the leaflet coming back in book bags over the next few days. It will only take a couple of minutes to complete and it will make a huge difference to our planning, so please return it to us via the office by  1 May.

Many thanks indeed, Ruth

Clubs & Sporting Activities

Friday After-School Football Club for Reception and Year 1

This summer term, the Friday after school football club is a special programme aimed at our very youngest footballers; those in Reception and Year 1.  The activities within these sessions have been specifically chosen to suit children of that age, girls or boys, of any ability; whether just starting out or having played football before.  We are also very keen for their parents to join in (ladies or gentlemen, of any ability!).  The primary objective of the sessions is to be enjoyable, allowing the children to improve at football, certainly, but more importantly to do it in an atmosphere of fun, at their own pace.  The activities of each session will consist of a set of specifically chosen fun games, which are enjoyable in their own right but are based around developing the basic movements required in football (ball control, running, jumping, dodging) but are also consistent with developing an interest and enthusiasm in sport more generally.

The sessions are taken by Chagford FC Youth Coach, Mark Goodman – FA Level 2 (Youth Modules 1 and 2), 3.30 and end at 4.30 and cost £2 per child, payable to the coach.

Chagford Youth Cricket 2015

Summer’s coming and cricket is here again! Chagford Youth Cricket starts on Friday 24th April. Registration is from 5pm for a 6pm start. This year the 5-6 year olds will train from 6-7pm, and the rest of the club 7-15 year olds will train from 6-8pm.

The cost is being frozen from last year so: £30 for the season or £3.50 per session for the 7-15 year olds, and £20 for the season or £2.50 per session for 5-6 year olds. There is a sliding scale for siblings.

The Friday night cricket sessions finish with our end of season party on 31st July (give or take 15 sessions).

All are welcome whether complete beginners or county players. Please come along for lots of fun, with plenty of opportunities to play in games too.

Not forgetting parents and grandparents, the bar will be open to enjoy a sundowner, chat with your friends and watch the children train.
