Chagford Church of England Primary School
Newsletter 24th April 2015
Dear Parents and Friends,
We have all enjoyed a wonderful week of sunshine and the children have been using the school grounds to their full extent. I have seen every class outside for their cricket sessions with Divan Marais and the tennis racquets have been out in force in our PE lessons. The children’s learning has also been taken outside with clusters of children using the quad and outdoor seating around the school to do their group work. It has been a wonderful week to walk around the school and see how the children collaborate together to achieve their learning.
It has also been a fantastic week for sporting competition. Last Friday the football team represented Chagford School at the West Devon Finals at Okehampton College on the all-weather pitches. The children were an absolute delight to be around for the afternoon and Craig and I were incredibly proud of their support for each other and commitment to the tournament. The games were fast and furious and all the children had to work very hard to keep up with the pace of each game. Although the team did not make it through to the finals on the day they did score some superb goals – much to the delight of the spectators! Fletcher was a force to be reckoned with in goal and made some spectacular saves, keeping the team in sight of winning during most of their games. Well done to you all for reaching the West Devon Finals and representing the school so well. Could I also thank those parents who were able to attend – their support was invaluable to the children.
Yesterday, Mr Evans and I took 25 children to the Cross Country Weaver Cup competition. It was a perfect day for running, with a cooling breeze compared to earlier in the week, and all the children ran extremely well across the almost two mile course. I am delighted to say that we came back with silverware in the form of medals for the A team who came second overall in the competition. The personal performances of some children were impressive; with five of the six boys in the A team coming in within the top 12 runners. Well done to each and every one of you; the running was superb. I have a feeling that we will be taking the cup from South Tawton next year!
Thank you for observing my recent reminders regarding the wearing of correct school uniform. I have to say that the children are much more aware of the expectations and will seek me out to personally explain if they have an issue on a particular day concerning their uniform. I do appreciate your support in maintaining the sense of pride that we have as a school.

Friday After-School Football Club for Reception and Year 1
This summer term, the Friday after school football club is a special programme aimed at our very youngest footballers; those in Reception and Year 1. The activities within these sessions have been specifically chosen to suit children of that age, girls or boys, of any ability; whether just starting out or having played football before. We are also very keen for their parents to join in (ladies or gentlemen, of any ability!). The primary objective of the sessions is to be enjoyable, allowing the children to improve at football, certainly, but more importantly to do it in an atmosphere of fun, at their own pace. The activities of each session will consist of a set of specifically chosen fun games, which are enjoyable in their own right but are based around developing the basic movements required in football (ball control, running, jumping, dodging) but are also consistent with developing an interest and enthusiasm in sport more generally.
The sessions are taken by Chagford FC Youth Coach, Mark Goodman – FA Level 2 (Youth Modules 1 and 2), 3.30 and end at 4.30 and cost £2 per child, payable to the coach.
