Dear All,

Okehampton Primary School are hosting an E-Safety session on Tuesday December 5th at 6.30pm.  They have booked an expert from SWGfL running an engaging session to parents. We are hoping to reach as many people across the community as possible. Okehampton Primary will be opening a crèche for the evening – but this MUST be booked prior to the evening by contacting the Okehampton Primary directly on 01837 52866. We do not hold any details about the crèche here at Chagford.

Please see below the letter to parents from Hazel Fox, Headteacher at Okehampton Primary. We do hope you will be able to support this event. Thank you.

At Okehampton Primary we are always keen to ensure the happiness and safety of the children and this includes on the internet. Children today are engaged with technology in a wide variety of ways. As well as using the internet for education, they also play games, socialise and invest a lot of their personality in the social and ever changing place that is the online world.

In school we endeavour to provide the skills to navigate the online world, and safety is a very important part of that. In order to help everyone understand ways in which they can provide the same support at home or in local clubs or churches, we will be running an evening on Tuesday 5th December at 6.30pm.

This evening will be an engaging session run by an expert from The South West Grid for Learning (SWGfL), part of the wider UK Safer Internet Centre.

What are Snapchat, Instagram, Omegele and Vine? What are the pluses and minuses? What about Apps? Do I need to monitor them? Is filtering or monitoring what my children do always a good idea? At what age do I buy them a mobile phone? Why is GTA5 not a game for young children? These are amongst some of the questions raised by parents and answered by our experts in the 7 years the SWGfL have carried out Parents Evenings.

Come and find out why dialogue is such a powerful tool. How filtering may work, how research is showing changes in use and types of use of technology by children. Discover easy to use built in tools like age and time restrictors in gaming platforms like your Xbox. How to apply Google filters on Google images, filters on YouTube and other practical quick tips. You protect your child in the offline world – now we can help you do the same online!

We will be offering a free crèche throughout the evening but booking is essential and light refreshments will be available.

I do hope you will be able to come along to this session.

Yours sincerely,

Hazel Fox, Headteacher
