Kestrels 1   22.4.16

This week we have been improving our understanding of tens and ones and all of those 2 digit numbers between 9 and 100. Any activities linked with these numbers at home would be great!

Everyone is enjoying our Houses and Homes topic. In forest school we have explored making caves, stick houses and tee pees, all of which are still used by people around the world.

We have had a first try at drawing a 3D house as part of our planning for making 3d houses. We have investigated different materials in our school building and linked their uses with their properties. Please have a look at home at the different materials in your own home and why each is good for the job it is doing.

We have made clay tiles with pictures of different homes on them. Some of us have clay tiles on our own roofs at home.

We have been enjoying ‘This is the house that Jack built’. We have had a try at writing our own versions; we’ve had some great ideas!

We have also thought about what sort of home we would live in, if we could choose what we are and where we would live.

Today we shall be practising skills for cricket: batting and fielding. Here is the rain too! Please enjoy playing with a ball at home: throwing, catching, aiming, rolling, batting and dribbling are all skills we want to improve.

Homework books are coming home today with a large sheet of all the sounds we need to know in phonics. Please help your child read and then write words for each sound. There are plenty, so please take your time and do just a few at a time! Please send the homework book into school each week, so that I can discuss with your child how he/she is getting on. Any queries, please be in touch.

This week, for the first time, we have begun joining pairs of letters as preparation for joined handwriting. Very exciting! There are four main joins to learn and we shall be learning these slowly and methodically, to help ensure accuracy from the start.

Some sad news. Beth will be leaving us at the end of next week, for family reasons. We shall miss her very much. Thank you Beth for all you have contributed! We hope you will come back to visit us. We shall be saying goodbye to Beth during next Friday`s assembly.

With best wishes from the Year 1 team.
