Dear Parents and Friends

Happy New Year to you all and welcome back. We have had a fantatsic start to our new term with children’s author Claire Barker visiting us to share her books and conduct some workshops with all the pupils. Many thanks must go to the Chagword Literary Festival who kindly organised and funded this unique experience for our pupils. Claire was wonderful and the children have gained so much from her input into their day. The idea behind the venture was to help inspire our young writers to enter the Chagword short story competition in February. I think that from Claire’s feedback we will have plenty of creative pieces of writing entered from chagford C E Primary School.

Could I also take this opportunity to extend a huge thank you Chantal Sorrell and her willing (or not so willing) group of volunteers who have been working incredibly hard to organise the area out to the front of the school with dry stone walling and new planting and landscaping. It is looking absolutely fantastic and will help considerably when it comes to collecting your chldren at the end of the day with the gravel areas. We are extremely lucky to have such a dedicated person as Chantal and her incredible ability to source all sorts of gems for the benefit of the school under the umbrella of ‘giving back to the community’. With this in mind please can I ask that everyone considers how much time and energy has been spent on this project and to respect the new wall and the gravelled areas. Please can you not allow your children to use the area as a digging pit, however tempting it may appear as it will damage the drainage very easily.

It has also been the first week for Mrs Burnell and Mr Smith who have both settled into life at Chagford School extremely well and the children have responded positively to their teaching and presence around the school. Change is always difficult to manage and believe me, it has been difficult for all the staff to say goodbye to Mrs Thomas and Miss Rowe (be it only fo a short time) but both new teachers have fitted into the team really well and we are all enjoying getting to know each other.

Have a great weekend

Liz Wiseman
