Dear Parent/ Carer,
Further to the announcement at the beginning of this term that an Executive Headteacher overseeing Chagford C E, South Tawton and North Tawton Primary Schools would be recruited to commence in September 2019, I am writing to confirm that I will remain in post as Headteacher for Chagford School for the academic year 2018-19. Unlike this past year, I will be based entirely at Chagford C E Primary School and look forward to settling the school community into our fantastic new school.
Mrs McDermott will be leaving our school to take a position working across the Multi Academy Trust, and will be based around Okehampton and Tavistock. Although Mrs McDermott has already officially started this transition, she will be spending some time during September 2018 overseeing the move into the new school and setting up procedures and contracts for ongoing maintenance/cleaning arrangements within the new building. Mrs Robinson will remain at Chagford School and will continue to be your first point of contact within the school office for any concerns or queries.
As you may be aware, our pupil numbers are reducing in September. As a result, we will be moving to five classes and for this academic year there will be some mixed aged classes across the school. As a school, our teaching staff are very experienced in teaching across year groups and the learning is always in response to individual children’s needs within the class. Our class structure will be as follows:
Reception- Ms S Halsey
Year 1 – Mrs C Thomas
Year 2/3 – Mr J Skinner
Year 4/5 – Miss L Rowe/Miss D Philpott
Year 5/6 – Mr L Billinghurst
For most pupils they will remain as a year group and move together or rejoin into one class in September. The current Year 4 class pupils will be split for the coming year and those parents will receive an individual letter explaining where their child will be based from September.
The teachers have had an opportunity to discuss the most appropriate class for every child during the next academic year, considering a number of different aspects.
I am very happy as always, to talk through any concerns that you may have so please feel free to phone or email me before our transition morning on Tuesday 17th July 2018.

PLEASE CAN ALL SCHOOL SPORTS TEAM KIT BE WASHED AND RETURNED TO THE SCHOOL
All participants will be emailed with additional details. * Some trips have limited places and will be given on a first come basis, this excludes class trips and sporting events. Consents, medical conditions and any donations will need to be completed on your school gateway account. If we are unable to cover the costs of the trip by donations we may have to cancel trips.
We currently have over £1,000 of unpaid school meals, just under £1,000 of unpaid breakfast and after school club bills, almost £2,500 of unpaid nursery bills and just under £200 costs relating to voluntary donations for trips and sporting fixtures not made. This is nearly £5,000 of debt – enough to fund a teaching assistant for afternoon work for a whole year. If we were a business, we would probably have been bankrupt by now. I must urge you all to check your SchoolGateway accounts and settle any outstanding debts as a matter of urgency. As a small school, we simply cannot sustain this level of debt on an ongoing basis. Our income from the Department for Education is monthly, and so we cannot sustain large overspends or debts on an ongoing basis. All clubs, activities, trips dinners, bills etc are managed through the SchoolGateway to simplify things for you. If you have any issues accessing the system, our office staff are always ready to help you in logging in and understanding your payments and discussing payment arrangements. We do not wish to stop our services such as after school club, or stop trips and fixtures happening; nor do we wish to call parents to request a packed lunch if they are in arrears, but we may be forced to consider these options if the position of our debts does not improve.
Please, log on and pay up! Thank you.
