This week has been one of change and growth for Oak class. We welcomed Jake back into the classroom to great fanfare- we missed his jolly demeanour and hard working attitude. Mr. Frewin has been getting his wallet out in class this week. The children have been identifying and adding different amounts of money – the totals have not been very high! We have learned different strategies to add both notes and coins. Remembering to add the larger denominations first. Starting with paper then to gold to silver and finally copper. A huge well done goes out to Fred who has proved to be as adept at adding coins as well notes. In English this week we begun our topic on non-chronological report writing. We started by creating a fictional creature using Julia Donaldson’s Gruffalo as a stimulus. Many of the pupils both at home and in school, loved the chance to create their own beast and used their descriptive powers to bring their creation to life. Benjy Chambers created a really scary three headed Moor prowler (see the pic) that I will definitely try and steer clear of on my moorland runs. After creating the beasts we decided a find of this importance needs to be shared with the grandfather of nature, Sir David Attenborough. We wrote a letter to the nation’s darling informing him of our unique discoveries. Check out Mikey’s super effort. We started new topics in RE and science as well this week. We are now going to be learning about Judaism in RE and plants in science. We’ve started our RE topic looking at the story of Abraham and the founding of Judaism. We acted out the story in class and Ruby played a fantastic God and Arthur a fantastic Abraham- great job guys. Well done to everyone at home that went to the time and effort to buy compost seeds and pots for our science investigation. We will investigate what a plant needs to grow strong and healthy. The seeds are now in and ready to germinate. Hopefully they will be seedlings by the time we all get back. I special mention needs to go to Henry who did some fantastic plant research online. He even created a beautifully presented did you know fact on a leaf template. We also went back in history to start our learning about our new topic Stone Age to Iron Age. We looked at what Prehistory meant and created a timeline to show all the different age... Can you name any? That's correct Stone Age, Iron Age and Bronze Age. We looked at the different eras in the Stone Age. Then delved a little deeper in to The Stone Age. There was lots of great discussion about threats and assets of animals, trees, caves and plants. We are looking forward to learning more. Continuing this weeks unintentional dragon/monster theme, We have started learning the French for different body parts as Mrs Robertson has set us the challenge to invent our own monsters. We will keep you posted on our creations

Oak class were challenged to create their own rainforest dioramas to show their learning from the term.
I was so impressed with their attempts, I had to share them. This week has been a real challenging one for Oak class. The maths work has meant a few of us have had to show real perseverance to gain full understanding. We have been using our times table knowledge to scale up different amounts. A massive well done needs to go out to Grace who is relishing the challenge and providing not only correct answers but astute observations in her working.
We have continued to read the Iron man and learn how strong friendships can be a great benefit for all involved. The children turned part of the story into a newspaper report ensuring they included all of a newspapers features. Kit produced a masterpiece that he should be very proud of. Well done Kit, perhaps a fruitful career as newspaper awaits you! We have been looking at Henri Rousseaus artwork as part of our topic of rainforests.
The children have produce some amazing artwork. ![]() This week has been an exciting one for Oak class. There has been lots more live sessions and the class’s engagement in these lessons has been really fun. Learning is just so much better as a shared experience. We started our book study of the Iron man this week. Mr Frewin has been really enjoying reading the story over google classroom and receiving some fantastic examples of work. Leading on from our poetry topic we have been primarily looking at the poetic techniques Ted Hughes uses to bring the story to life. We have looked at metaphors and similes and the children have been using them in their own writing. Check out Ollie’s fantastic piece of writing from a seagull’s perspective. Can you spot his two similes? We gave the children a choice of tasks one of them was to write a poem using Rhyming couplets. George went a step further and not only included rhyming couplets but also all of the poetic devices we have been studying. Superb effort George. We started our poetic journey thinking about the impact of word choices on our reader. We experimented with the use of synonyms and onomatopoeic words to evoke emotions. We imagined we were at the beach and how that would make us feel. Fred bravely challenged himself to explore his emotions of eating a Donut and shared his poem with us. We continued our journey to explore past tense and present perfect tense. Looking at things which that make you feel happy. We finished our journey with some brilliant anecdotes. We had to think of an event in our lives and break it in to stanzas to share. Brilliant lockdown learning in school and at home. Well done Oak Class
