Year 3 – Oak Class

A Midsummer Night's dream!

Hello everyone!

This week has been an exciting one indeed!  We've had a lot of our regular lessons, and activities such as swimming, but we used most of our energy this week on our whole school production of 'A Midsummer Night's dream'.... and wow, you were all AMAZING!  From the costumes, to the singings, to the super 'cheeky-pixie' acting, Oak class have been true thespians for the last few days.  Myself and Betsy were so impressed by not only their acting and singing, but also by their patience while waiting 'backstage' before and after we had performed.  We performed in the sun, the wind, and even in a little rain, and Oak class managed to concentrate and remain quiet for the majority of the performance which was superb.  Everyone loved the performance too, and we were laughing and clapping along with the audience.  Well done Oak class, you should all be very proud of yourselves!

One extra surprise this week was the arrival of some class pets... on Tuesday, this mysterious note arrives, and by Wednesday morning we had 10 little caterpillars join us!  We'll be keeping a close eye on them, and are looking forward to them transforming into Painted Lady butterflies.

I hope you all get some rest after your busy days performing, Oak class!

Nearly ready for our play!

 Hello everyone!

This week we've been spending lots of time practising for our school production of 'Midsummer Night's Dream'.  We've been working on our singing, acting, and characterisation of our fantastic puppets.  Today we had out first run-through with the whole school - it's coming along really well, and I can't wait to see it next week!

As well as the play, we've started to focus on Time in Maths.  We've thought about telling the time to quarter hours, as well as learning about the months in the year, and leap years.  The children were very curious about leap years - "Who decided that a leap year is every 4 years?" asked one child!  This led to an impromptu Science lesson about the earth's rotation around the sun, and how long it really takes for the earth to move once around the sun! (Why not ask a member of Oak class why leap years happen every 4 years?!)

In English, we've been thinking about how to persuade.  We've been looking at an example of a letter from the RSPB which persuades people to donate to the charity.  Next week, the children are going to become ambassadors for the Rainforest Alliance, and try to persuade myself (along with the other teachers) to support the charity.  If I can be persuaded in the letters from the children, I might even donate some money on behalf of the class - but they have to persuade me first!

It was also a great week in French this week.  Madame Jordan has been teaching the children about pets and animals, and this week they created their very own petshop.  The children first practice a conversation in French to buy some pets, then they visited Madame Jordan's petshop to put their French to the test!

Finally, I have a few things to ask:

- As the weather is improving, please ensure that your child has a hat with them in school.  Also, if you are able to, please provide your child with a bottle of suncream which they could keep in their bag.  Suncream would be particularly useful for the play next week if the weather is sunny, as there isn't much shelter in the amphitheatre.

 - If you haven't already, please bring in your costume for the play on Monday next week (20th June).  We are due to have a costume check on Monday where the children will try them on, so they need their costume in school.  If you have any questions about the play or costumes, please do let me know.

Have a good weekend everyone - keep practising our songs and dance!

What a week!

Hello again everyone!

First of all, welcome back after half-term!  I hope you all had a great week, and enjoyed the sunshine!

This week (albeit only 4 days long!) has certainly been a busy one.  On Tuesday, Oak class has their first swimming lesson at the Chagford Pool.  All the children did really well, and loved their hot chocolates afterwards!  The class were super sensible whilst walking down, and we had no problems with any traffic we came across.  Don't forget your swimming things for Tuesday next week again!

It isn't long until our big Chagford production of A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Oak class have been working hard to practice.  On Tuesday, the very talented puppet maker Todd visited Year 2 and 3, and we created some of our own puppets for the play.  Have a look at some of our puppets - I think they look great!  We've also been rehearsing with Lydia, and Oak class are getting on brilliantly.  It's made me very excited to see the whole production in 2 weeks time!

A big part of this week was the OFSTED inspection on both Tuesday and Wednesday.  OFSTED can be difficult for both teachers and classes, but Oak class were very respectful and hard-working throughout the inspection.  I'm really proud of the children for welcoming the inspectors, and for trying their absolute best!

Well done on a fantastic week Oak class - enjoy the weekend!
