A great first full week in Yew Tree class!
This week we have had lots of fun playing a variety of different games in our new PE hall and building upon our skills of teamwork and communication. We have focused mostly on ball skills but are looking forward to expanding upon our core skills for next week’s lessons!
In Maths, we have been exploring place value and how we can compare different numbers using <, > and =. We began with some random number generating and using Base 10, a system for representing tens and ones, to explain the differences between the numbers we had created. Next week, we will be moving forward from these skills into comparing and ordering different numbers based on their values.
In English, we have started our new book called Captain Yellowbelly: The tale of the Terrible Pirate. We had lots of fun sequencing what happens in the story before investigating how we can use adjectives to describe and excite the reader. A personal favourite has to be a noun phrase that described the ‘Devilishly cheeky’ seagull! WOW!
In Science, we have begun our focus on Rocks for Year 3 and Materials for Year 2. The Year 2’s had a great time researching what materials they could find around the school and Year 3 had the opportunity to get hands on with different rocks and enjoyed learning about the process of how rocks are formed. Next week we are hoping to begin comparing and organising the rocks we find around school!
Finally, we began our History topic on Chagford and the Local Area by creating some artwork on famous Chagford Buildings using our sketching skills. We also delved deep into the history of Chagford by comparing some old photos of the area from 1922 to how things look today. The children explained they certainly feel very lucky they don’t have to wear the silly clothes they did in the past!
Next week, we are looking forward to learning more about how to excite readers with different sentences and word types, comparing and ordering numbers through creating our own Top Trumps and Pokemon cards, Learning more about the history of Chagford and lots more!
Have a great weekend everyone!
Joe Skinner and the Year 2/3 team.
