Religious Education and Spirituality
At Chagford Primary School, Religious Education and Worldviews (RE) plays an important role in helping children understand a wide range of beliefs, values and worldviews.
Pupils learn about Christianity and other principal religions represented in Britain and across the world through an engaging, enquiry-led approach. They are encouraged to ask questions, reflect thoughtfully and discuss ideas with respect. This helps children to appreciate how beliefs influence individuals and communities, understand cultural diversity, and develop respect for others in a multi-cultural society.
Our RE curriculum follows the Devon Agreed Syllabus and is supported by resources from NATRE. Through RE, pupils develop knowledge, curiosity and understanding, while also supporting their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.
We believe RE is valuable for all children. However, parents have a legal right to withdraw their child from RE lessons. We encourage parents to discuss any concerns with staff, and requests for withdrawal should be made in writing to the Headteacher.
Collective Worship
At Chagford Primary School, collective worship is an important part of our school life and reflects our Christian values and ethos. Through assembly, pupils and staff come together to explore Christian beliefs, consider big questions and develop their understanding of spirituality, values and community. Collective worship includes singing and music, which help create a shared sense of reflection, joy and belonging.
Collective worship is inclusive, age-appropriate and meaningful for all pupils.
We recognise that parents may choose to withdraw their child from collective worship. We encourage families to discuss this with the Headteacher so that decisions are fully informed. Appropriate arrangements will be made to support and supervise any pupils who are withdrawn. Staff also have the right to withdraw from collective worship if they wish.
Our School Prayer
Our God
Lord of the high tors
and the singing rivers,
Lord of the farmhouse,
the village, the town
and the city.
Be with us
in our hearts,
in our kindness,
and in the wide, wide world
around and beyond us,
on every step
of our journey.
Amen
