The school has its own kitchen which prepares a range of nutritious healthy meals using ‘Fresh Start’ menus. Vegetarian meals are always available.
Those families who are currently in receipt of Income Support, Income Based Jobseeker’s Allowance, the Guaranteed Element of Pension Credit or Child Tax Credit (without Working Tax Credit) where income is less than the statutory lower limit, employment and support allowance(income related), support under part VI of the immigration and asylum may be entitled to Free School Meals. All children in Foundation Stage and KS1 are entitled to a free hot meal every day. Further details can be obtained from the School Administrator. We would like to reassure parents and carers that children receiving free school meals are not treated any differently when they go to the dining hall.
Parents and carers who do not wish their children to have school meals can provide them with a packed lunch.
Children bringing packed lunches will need to have an appropriate packed lunch box with a balanced selection of food and a drink container. Please note that vacuum flasks containing glass are not allowed nor are cans/fizzy drinks.

Universal infant free school meals
The Government introduced universal infant free school meals for all key stage 1 pupils from September 2014. All pupils in reception, year 1 and year 2 in state-funded schools in England are eligible for Universal Infant Free school meals. This will include academies, free schools, pupil referral units and alternative provisions as well as maintained schools.

Through the Citizen Portal which is the quickest and easiest way to apply and will result in you getting an instant decision.
Qualifying benefits
Parents/carers in receipt of the following support payments will be entitled to receive free school meals:
Please note that from 1 April 2018, all existing free school meals claimants will continue to receive free school meals whilst Universal Credit is rolled out. This will apply even if their earnings rise above the new threshold during that time. In addition, any child gaining eligibility for free school meals after 1 April 2018 will be protected against losing free school meals during the Universal Credit rollout period.
Once Universal Credit is fully rolled out, any existing claimants that no longer meet the eligibility criteria at that point (because they are earning above the threshold or are no longer a recipient of Universal Credit) will continue to receive free school meals until the end of their current phase of education (i.e. primary or secondary).
The Universal Credit rollout is currently expected to complete in March 2023.

SCHOOL UNIFORM
Our hope is that the wearing of a school uniform will give pupils a sense of identity and pride in their school, as well as encouraging them to care for their own personal appearance and feel an equal member of the school community. As such, we would like to politely request that parents adhere to our school uniform policy to forge a sense of community amongst the children.

Online Payments School Meals, Trips, Events, Consents
School Gateway is a secure, online payments system for all payments of school meals, consents for trips and events. It is also our text messaging system for urgent text messages e.g. if clubs or fixtures are cancelled, and our email application for notification of payment/consent requests and all school news.
To register, you will need to sign up for a School Gateway account by visiting www.schoolgateway.com. Enter your current email address and mobile number (these must match the primary contact details you have registered with the school) and select the “Send PIN” button. A PIN will be sent to your mobile phone. Use this to log into your new School Gateway account. With your School Gateway account, you will be able to view payments made, see when your child has had a school meal, and check your balance. The minimum payment bundle for school meals is £11.50.

· How will emails get to me and what will they look like? The emails will arrive in your inbox at your email address just like any other email and will have the school’s name in the “from” box.

All children have a home school diary which encourages regular communication between teachers and parents. Messages are written in this book and it is also used to record daily reading, comments and book titles. Many teachers also use it to record weekly spellings, as well as using it to communicate praise and achievements.

This is a free service to parents which allows the school to send you a variety of information and messages, via email and SMS. We encourage parents to download the app (if you have a smartphone) as this means the school saves money! We currently send out a link to our weekly Newsletter via School Comms also, and on the Blog. We will also post details of any school closure during adverse weather. To register with the School Gateway, please click on the icon on the homepage. It is vital that you keep us informed of your up to date contact details. If you need to amend your details please contact the school office.

We will always use the latest information we have received from parents directly, and not pupils, to inform our decisions. Safeguarding is always our main priority and if we cannot contact parents to confirm arrangements we will always keep the children safe at school in our After School Club until we can make contact with you.

OUR THRIVE APPROACH
The Thrive Approach believes that every child needs to feel that they belong, that they matter, and that they are valued for their unique qualities. Like all of us at some point in our lives, children face challenges that knock them off course. What is needed then is understanding and support to get them back on track.

All parents/carers of children with Asthma should ensure that they have completed a SCHOOL ASTHMA CARD and that the school has a spare inhaler for their child. We encourage children to self-medicate where they are deemed mature enough by their Asthma nurse/ parent, or carer.

MEDICATION AT SCHOOL
We are happy to dispense prescribed, named medication for your child at school, for example, antibiotics and non-prescription medicine e.g. Calpol for temporary pain management. All medication must be labeled with your child’s name or prescribed by your child’s GP. You must complete the Parental Agreement to Administer Prescription or Non-Prescription Medicine Form which can be found in the policy Supporting Pupils with Medical Needs and Administration of Medicines.
SCHOOL NURSE
At Chagford Primary School we offer parents and carers a free and confidential ‘drop in’ session with the local school community nurse once a term. If you have any concerns or queries about any aspect of your child’s health, please do come along to a session. The nurse will be able to give advice on a variety of issues including bed-wetting, sleep problems, eating concerns or any issue which is affecting your child. You can also contact the Nurse Team directly.

FIRST AID
In the event of your child having a minor accident or injury whilst at school we have a number of staff fully qualified in First Aid and/or Paediatric First Aid. If your child has had an injury they will be given basic treatment as required. If staff are in the slightest bit concerned about an injury we will contact you by telephone. However, for head injuries or bumps, a Head Bump form is always sent home.
What happens if your child is ill at school
If your child complains of feeling unwell at school, we will notify you at home or work to see if there have been any concerns that morning. Depending on the time of day and how unwell your child is, you may be asked to come and collect your child from school. It is essential that parents keep the office up to date of any changes in phone numbers either at home, work or on a mobile network. Please also ensure that any additional emergency contact details are also kept up to date. In the event that you cannot be contacted, we will move onto the next emergency contact details.

If your child complains of feeling unwell at school, we will notify you at home or work to see if there have been any concerns that morning. WHAT TO DO IF YOUR CHILD IS UNWELL
We keep detailed records of each child’s attendance and punctuality, which is monitored by the school and our Education Welfare Officer, who makes regular visits. If your child is unwell, please telephone the school office first thing in the morning on the day of your child’s absence informing us that they will not be at school and the expected date of return. A note explaining the absence should then be brought to school on your child’s return. Please note for child safety reasons we operate a first-day call policy. If a parent has not informed us that their child will be absent and the child is not present at registration then we will text/telephone the parent until we can establish that your child is safe. If your child has a medical appointment please inform the office or your child’s class teacher in advance.

Head lice are tiny insects that live in human hair, and are particularly common in children. They can’t fly, jump or swim and are spread by head-to-head contact, climbing from the hair of an infected person to the hair of someone else. Prevention is the best cure, so if your child has long hair, please ensure it is tied back for school!

Due to current COVID-19 restrictions, we are currently only able to offer a before-school breakfast club during term time only, limited to 10 places per day. We hope to resume after-school clubs once Government restrictions have been further lifted. Breakfast club is available daily from 8:00AM until the start of school.

E-SAFETY
At Chagford Primary School we take the safety of all pupils and staff seriously. This includes being safe on-line and whilst using other technology.
Our E-Safety Policy outlines how we do this in detail. As part of our policy, we ask all parents to sign an Acceptable Use Policy on behalf of their child and all Governors and Staff (and visitors where appropriate) also sign a similar agreement.
However, we know that children need to be protected when out of school. The NSPCC visit school to teach children about how they can stay safe and these messages are re-enforced through classroom teaching and conversations. We also encourage parents and carers to take responsibility for protecting their children. The NSPCC website provides tips and advice as well as what to do if you have a concern and can be found at www.nspcc.org.uk. Their Share Aware and Net Aware tools help you to make decisions about social media use and give advice on privacy settings.

What is SIMS Parent?
SIMS Parent is used to collect and process key information about your child and you, as parents/ carers, to ensure the data we hold is accurate and up to date. We also use SIMS Parent to allow you to provide consents where necessary. You can update these consents at any time. You will be able to provide additional information on crucial details such as medical information or dietary requirements.
Getting Started
Chagford CE Primary School will send an activation email to your home email address. Then carry out the following steps:
- Simply click on the link from your tablet, pc or smartphone to activate your account.
- Login using your Facebook, Twitter, Google, Microsoft or other email address username and password.
- Download the app, to make it easier to view the information on a smart phone, or continue to access the site through a normal browser window.
How do I access the app?
Available on iOS and Android the SIMS Parent app provides a convenient and accessible solution for you to electronically review and request changes to the data held on you and your children via smartphone or tablet.
What will I be able to view and update?
- Pupil/ Student Information – this contains basic information such as your child’s name, preferred name and date of birth.
- Address – this is your child’s home address. You can add an additional address e.g. if your child lives with both parents
- Telephone numbers and email addresses – this is your child’s home number. Please DO NOT add an email address for your child here.
- Medical Details – this includes information such as medical practice, medical conditions and any disabilities. There is a drop-down list of medical practices and conditions, but you can add a new one if your child’s details are different.
- Cultural Information – Your child’s first language is collected for all pupils and records the language as stated by the parent / guardian or child. This information is used for funding. Ethnicity is collected for all pupils and records the ethnicity as stated by the parent / guardian or pupil. It is not ascribed by the school.
- Dietary Needs – please update your child’s dietary needs here. For allergies and gluten free needs, these should be supported by a letter from a medical professional.
What else can I view and update?
Contacts
Please ensure that the contact information for your child is accurate and up to date. You will be able to see your own contact information, address and telephone/email and that of your third-party contacts.
If you do not live at the same address as the other parents/carers with parental responsibility, you will only be able to see contact information (name, parental responsibility status and contact priority status) for them, unless you give us express permission to share your details with them. You will need to contact the school office if you are happy for us to share those details.
You will be able to see contact information, address and telephone/email for any third party contacts e.g. Grandma, neighbour you have previously provided and edit these. If you do not wish those details to be shared please contact the school office.
Parental Responsibility – Please ensure that the ‘Parental Responsibility’ slider bar is set correctly. For a definition of Parental Responsibility please read the following guidelines: https://www.gov.uk/parental-rights-responsibilities . This is usually the mother and father, and would not normally include grandparents, neighbours, friends or other family members.
Priority Contact – Where possible, please include one Priority 1, and one Priority 2 contact. Having multiple priority 1 contacts can be confusing and misleading in the event of an emergency, and we will always contact the next priority person if we cannot reach the first person. You must provide at least two contacts for the school.
Local Contacts – Where possible, the contacts should be local and accessible. A contact in Dorset or Dundee is not always best placed to help if your child is unwell.
Telephone Numbers – Please ensure you give us the contact numbers that you are most likely to have access to. Please do not give a work number if we cannot reach you on this number, or a mobile if you are never in range. Please ensure the slider bar is checked for your primary (main) contact number as we use this to reach you if your child is unwell.
Parental Consent
We need your consent for processing your child’s data where we don’t have a statutory duty or a public task basis for processing the data.
Your child’s school will ask for a number of consents, which may include some or all of the following:
Pupil photographs in media It is great to celebrate the achievements and hard work of our pupils. Photographic images of pupils used in publicly available media such as websites, newsletters or the school prospectus and other promotional material will not identify pupils’ full names unless parental permission has been given in advance. No identifying information will be shared (such as personal phone numbers, home addresses, and individual pictures with the pupil’s full name.) Class pictures will not identify where individuals are standing and will generally include at least three or more students. If individual pictures are posted of pupils, they will not include their name.
Pupil photographs on Social Media – Social Media platforms such as Facebook are a popular way for schools to share information to parents and carers and to celebrate success. Please note that websites and social media platforms can be viewed throughout the world and not just in the United Kingdom where UK law applies. By consenting, you agree to your child’s photograph being used on our social media platform. We don’t publish pupils’ names on our social media platforms without separate, explicit consent.
Sale of Group/ Individual Photos – By ticking consent, you agree to allow your child to be photographed with their class/group/team and that these photographs will be offered for sale to you and other parents.
Personal use acceptance – We would like to draw your attention to the issue of photographs taken by parents and carers at school events for their personal use. This type of activity does not fall under the GDPR. We recognise the importance of recording treasured moments and memories of children during their education within our school. In many cases when photographs are taken in school capturing educational moments, they provide much pleasure to parents and extended families. We accept, on trust, that all photographs and videos are for personal use and must not be published in local media, social media, or online, without the written consent of school. Photos and videos taken purely for personal use are exempt from the GDPR. Personal use may include: a parent takes a photograph of their child and some friends taking part in the school Sports Day to be put in the family photo album. These images are for personal use and the GDPR does not apply; Grandparents are invited to the school nativity play and wish to video it. These images are for personal use and the GDPR does not apply.
School Newsletter - Included in our school newsletter, we may send you relevant and appropriate information about fundraising events with our PTFA or other local charities, and information about local commercial or not for profit services such as holiday clubs, child-friendly activities or other children’s services. To do this, we need your consent under the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations so please be aware that by consenting, you agree to receive this information by electronic means.
Walk Home Alone – For pupils in Year 6, we allow them to walk home from school with the express permission and consent of parents. By ticking this box, you consent to this.
Local Off-Site Visits – from time to time, teachers may decide to visit a local building or area during normal school hours, where the visit doesn’t require any special equipment or a change to normal eating plans. For longer planned visits we will normally advise you of this through the School Gateway, however, for short-duration, local visits, this consent acts as your permission for your child to participate in the activity.
Other school-specific consents will be visible when you are using the app. If you are unsure, please ask the school office.
What will happen if I make a change to my information?
When a change request is submitted by you, an alert is sent to the school office. Administrators will review requests and update our pupil/student database. From time to time, we will send notifications to remind you to update your child’s details or parental consents, eliminating paper-based data collection and manual errors.
What if I have children at different schools?
If you have children at different schools within the Dartmoor Multi Academy Trust, you will be able to see all children within the app if you have registered with the same email account. The app allows users to change school once inside SIMS Parent from a drop-down menu located on the school name in the top right-hand corner of the page. If you can't see all your children, this is usually because the information has been entered differently in both schools. Please call the school office for the child you can’t see and ask them to talk to the school where you can see your child, and they will be able to update the information.
Is it secure?
We value your privacy and only process your information in line with our trust Privacy Policy. You can read more about our Data Protection policies here https://www.dartmoormat.org.uk/gdpr.html. The system gives you control over your data and is more secure that pieces of paper. You have to be invited by the school, through the email we hold, so unauthorised access can’t happen. Troubleshooting
Can’t see all your children?
If you can't see all your children, this is usually because the information has been entered differently in both schools. Please call the school office for the child you can’t see and ask them to talk to the school where you can see your child, and they will be able to update the information.
Lost your activation email?
Contact the school office and ask them to resend. They will be able to unregister you and re-register you.
Haven’t received an activation email?
The school may not hold an up to date email for you to send the activation link to. Give the school a ring and ask them to check that your email and mobile are correct – they will then be able to resend the activation email at your request.

In September 2018, we opened our doors to our brand new, purpose-built 210-space primary school plus purpose-built preschool within our Foundation Stage Unit.
Built to meet the exacting demands of educational spaces in the 21st century, all classrooms meet design standards specifying air quality, ventilation, natural lighting and are wonderful spaces in which our children can learn.
We also have a fantastic hall with great projection and sound facilities. We also have a large kitchen which can cater for up to 210 pupils and a separate kitchenette for smaller gatherings. The hall opens to the rear of the school onto our amazing school grounds, with a tiered amphitheatre, wildlife area, playing field and sports pitch.
A Gardening Committee, made up of staff and members of the local community, has been formed to plan, design and implement several distinct areas within the grounds, to enrich the children's outdoor learning experiences.
