We have had some beautiful, if slightly scorching weather here in Chagford recently - and what better way to make the most of this then starting swimming lessons and cricket?! The children have already had 2 swimming sessions and I have to say, I was very impressed by this week's behaviour. The class conducted themselves very sensibly on the walk down to the pool, listened carefully to the instructors and had a lovely time. We know that you'll do us proud and be just as respectful and welcoming to our cricket coach over the coming weeks.
The class have also been writing some very powerful poetry with important messages about the environment. So far, we've studied the poem 'There's a Rang-Tan in my Bedroom' - a poem published alongside Greenpeace, which tells the story of deforestation in Borneo from the orang-utan's point of view. This had a real impact on the children, and now we will be researching more about deforestation in line with our topic all about Brazil, before writing our own poems that will be narrated by Brazilian animals. Some rather frustrating news - I have been asked to self-isolate by the NHS test and trace scheme. Thankfully, we have had no symptoms of Covid-19 so there is no cause for alarm and no need for anyone else to self-isolate. However, it means that I will be away until Monday 28th June. The children will receive work that is planned by me so they do not miss out on our Summer Term activities. I will very much look forward to seeing everyone once the isolation has finished! Stay healthy! Mrs Robertson

I've been delighted to end the week on such a high with Hawthorn Class! At the moment, we're learning about states of matter in Science, so learnt what makes a solid, a liquid and a gas. That said, we've just been outside playing with Oobleck! It was so much fun to see how this mixture of cornflour and water could sometimes act like a solid and sometimes like a liquid! See the picture below!
There's also been many an act of kindness going on around school, which we have been celebrating as one of our school values. A particular thank you to the children who have been so caring and inclusive in the playground. We've made an effort this week to actively show kindness towards all members of the school community, even if they're not our particular friends. Have a wonderful bank holiday, everyone! We hope that you have a safe and happy time and we'll look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday. See you soon, Mrs Robertson Hawthorn class have had a wonderful start to the Summer Term! Just a few highlights have included:
Wow, what a week it's been. First of all, what a delight to have everyone back in Hawthorn class together again. It's been energetic, fun, busy and happy! How great to see each other and get to share our learning and play times together again.
We've been up to all sorts...
Last but not least, it would be remiss of me not to mention our fancy dress day today as a belated World Book day... we have had incredible outfits, including Harry Potter, the Cat in the Hat and characters from stories that the children are currently writing in their spare time! Wow! I can't wait to read what these budding authors have to say. Have a great weekend everyone and well done for your hard work - this week, the Praise certificate goes to ALL of you!!! Mrs Robertson It's the end of the road for the home learning and we cannot wait to see all of you next week in the classroom! It's been really great though to see how many of you have joined in from home, even when the Internet has been a bit dodgy. Top marks for effort, everyone!
We've had lots of fun learning this week, making the most of the wonderful sunshine earlier in the week, as we've had some English lessons outside. The class have been looking at Captain Cook's diaries of how he sailed around Australasia, and then using these ideas to form their own exciting, atmospheric diary entries. Pretending to be an explorer is definitely one way to get around lockdown restrictions! We also have started turning our 'daily dash' into a long distance running challenge, where the children tally up their laps and aim to run a mile each day. We will be encouraging each other all the way - some of us are natural runners, some of us are definitely not! I have already been incredibly impressed with the perseverance and teamwork that I've seen, with class members helping each other around the track. A wonderful start, keep it up. Below are some pictures of our week. Remember 'Screen-Free Friday' tomorrow - we are looking forward to hearing what you got up to when we are all together on Monday! Have a great weekend everyone, Mrs Robertson. It was a fun-filled week in Hawthorn Class last week, as we went out exploring Forest School as part of our Science and Art work this week. We identified many a living thing using the acronym MRS NERG...or MRS GREN...which do you prefer?! The children took some great close-up photos which I've posted below. We're going to use these to do close-up studies of nature, just like the photographer Levon Biss. Levon Biss zooms in so much with his photography, that we were able to see all the textures and tiny little hairs/eyes etc. of each insect. Some of if made us go "Wow!", some of it made us go "Eurgh!" I'm really looking forward to seeing the children's artwork, once they've had a chance to zoom in close on their own photos!
We also began our new topic on Climate and the children did so well to remember a lot of new terminology, such as the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, the Greenwich Meridian and lines of latitude and longitude. We then discussed which climates we'd find on which areas of the globe. To be continued this week! Keep up the wonderful efforts at school and at home everyone - we are really looking forward to seeing all your faces during our live lessons this week on Google Classroom. We can't wait for everyone to be back together on March 8th. One week to go! Take care and stay safe, Mrs Robertson Dear Hawthorn Class,
You have now successfully completed a half term's worth of remote learning! Well done! It's a huge achievement - you have made time in your days to complete work for all sorts of different subjects and together I feel we are getting better at learning via technology! It was particularly fun to read through a play together this week and we had some wonderful acting from those of you taking on the parts of Anglo Saxon monks and Vicious Vikings! Huge well done to Gigi for persevering with her part, although the connection was a bit dodgy! Below I've attached some pictures of the children who have been in school this week. We've been working hard on writing the next scene of the play that tells the story of Lindisfarne. I'm really looking forward to reading playscripts from the rest of the class who have completed this task at home. We have also had some great online practices of the song 'This Is Me', learning the words at the same time as using sign language. This has been in aid of the annual 'Sign 2 Sing' event, which raises awareness and money for the deafness charity SignHealth. You can find more information about it here: https://sign2sing.org.uk/ Our favourite signs so far have been for the words 'drum' and 'this is me'. Finally, I couldn't end this blog without mentioning what fun we had playing in the snow this week! See below for a few pictures! Have a wonderful half term, everyone! You all deserve a big rest and as much fun as possible in these rather strange times. Stay safe and healthy and looking forward to seeing you all after the break! Mrs Robertson Hi everyone! Hope that you've all had a fabulous start to February. We've had a very busy week involving the following:
Last week, we gave out three certificates in class to children had had exceeded expectations in their effort with their school work - this was Belle, Abigail and Elliot! You three went the extra mile with your learning whether you were learning from home or in school. Congratulations - some very well-deserved certificates! Dear Hawthorn Class, It's been quite a strange month, with most of you learning from home and a few of you in school. Everyone has really impressed Miss Fell and I with their efforts - many of you have been tuning in to Google classroom to complete work online, so that you are doing exactly the same work as we are in school. Highlights of the month:
Have a look at the pictures below to see some of the work you've been doing! As we enter February, we look forward to learning more about playscripts, fractions and all sorts of other things to keep you busy and learning. Keep well everybody and see you soon online on a live session very soon. Mrs R Dear Hawthorn Class, By now, you will be aware that many of you will be learning from home for now. Miss Fell and I are so sorry that we won't get to see you in person and wish you a Happy New Year. We will be in regular touch though, with your home learning activities, which will be exactly the same as what we had planned to do in school, but changed a little to make it possible for you to complete at home. For now, Miss Fell and I are going to upload key learning activities to this blog so that you are up to date. Do not worry if you do not have a printer to help with this - all activities can be adapted/ copied out with pen and paper. Your Maths and English is attached as files below. For RE/ PSHE, please write a prayer for the New Year. This could include feelings of hope, faith, or any other values that you think will be important this year. We will share these when you are back in school.. Miss Fell and I will be in touch in due course to make sure everyone is okay. Take care everybody and really looking forward to seeing you in the near future. Mrs Robertson.
